Although the 1980’s best selling tongue and cheek book The Official Preppy Handbook named Fairfield among the “preppiest” places in the United States, Fairfield’s population is diverse, reflecting the different geographic and ethnic backgrounds of its residents. Diversity is also reflected in its distinctive neighborhoods. Beautiful homes can be found in the upscale sections of Southport and Greenfield Hill. Southport is home to the Pequot Library, maintaining one of the nation’s most impressive collections of rare volumes and Americana. The Greenfield Hill area, which holds the Dogwood Festival every May, showcases beautiful homes built by merchants and prosperous farmers of the past. Down by the beach, cottages dot the eight miles of shore line, while colonials mix with condominiums throughout the town.
The downtown area is a bustling scene of shops and restaurants. At the center is the town green, one of the many parks scattered around the town perfect for hiking, picnicking, and in the winter months, ice skating. In the summer, residents enjoy the beach, which is a short walk from town, where they can swim at one of the four public beaches and enjoy boating activities from the marinas and boat basins. Golf can be played at one of the six public and private golf courses, and there are five year-round clay tennis courts.
Fairfield is home to two major universities – Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University, which have activities the whole town can enjoy - from theater and lectures to Division I level athletics, keeping the town young and vibrant.
Another draw to Fairfield is its low crime rate. Fairfield was ranked as the second safest municipality in the United States by Money Magazine’s 2006 Best Places to Live Survey.
The Merritt Parkway runs just north of the downtown area, while I-95 is in downtown Fairfield. The Metro-North has two stops: downtown Fairfield and Southport.
